Phosphatidic acid is a part of what is classed as a ‘phospholipid’, this type of lipid makes up cell membranes. As well as being a major structural component of the body, Phosphatidic Acid is also what’s know as a ‘signaling’ molecule, which put simply, means its presence can make us more ‘anabolic’ and allow us to be far more efficient in recovering from training.
Phosphatidic Acid (PA) has been reported to activate the m-TOR C1 (mammalian target of rapamycin) signalling pathway and is documented to enhance the anabolic effects of resistance training.
Research data published by Hoffman et al, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2012 & Mobley et al, Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2015 as well as a 2014 study by Nutrition & Metabolism, all conclude that PA is efficient in upregulating Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) and supplementation is responsible for noticeable increases in lean muscle growth, muscular thickness and strength increases in resistance-trained individuals.
So how does PA work and how can we benefit from it?
Well, put basically, the published data re Phosphatidic Acid reports it (PA) allows the body to engage in increased levels of Muscle Protein Synthesis.
When we train, particularly resistance type training, we create a ‘muscular overload’ situation that causes the muscles to ‘adapt’, eg: to grow and become stronger.
Of course, it is accepted that elevated protein consumption will aid this process. Now imagine we have the ability by supplementing with PA to increase the uplift and adaption (MPS) of our higher protein diets by up to 51%! (according to Hoffman et al) This is quoted as the result of one JISSSN study, also with PA showing a potential 12.1% increase in strength gains against placebo.
Doesn’t Leucine do the same job?
A very good observation! But as current published research suggests, whilst PA & Leucine play similar roles, both use variations in m-TOR signalling pathways. Phosphatidic Acid could be viewed here as a ‘Master m-TOR C1 Signaller’ with leucine playing a back-up role (in m-TOR C1 & C2 signalling) when supplemented at differing times to PA.
So, with cell growth responding to multiple signals from different directions, a Phosphatidic Acid and L-Leucine ‘stack’ could well be viewed (taking current published data into account) as having the best-of-both worlds and doing a ‘belt & braces’ job for maximal m-TOR stimulation, optimal Muscle Protein Synthesis, muscular repair, recovery and growth.
